The National Institute for Animal Agriculture's Animal Disease Issues & Emergency Management Council is hosted a webinar in July 2025 to explore the threat of New World Screwworm (NWS) to U.S. livestock and public health. NWS is a devastating pest causing serious, often deadly damage to the animals when larvae burrow into the flesh of the living animal. NWS can infest livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds, and in rare cases, people. There are significant efforts under way to keep the spread of NWS into the U.S. at bay.
